Photo by Paolo Woods and Gabriele Galimberti @gabrielegalimbertiphoto and @paolowoods / Sandro Schievenin is qualified works employed by the Opera Santa Maria del Fiore that runs the complex of monuments and museum the compromise the Duomo of Florence. He is photographed in the orb that caps the dome on a routine checkup visit. The dome was designed by Brunelleschi. The orb, or the “palla” as it is known in Italy, is a copper hollow sphere, gilded in gold, of 2,30m in diameter and weighs more than 18 tons placed atop the dome. It was constructed by the workshop of Verrocchio in 1469 and Leonardo da Vinci, an apprentice of Verrocchio at the time, actively worked at designing and constructing the orb, that according to Vasari “required much care and ingenuity, to make it possible to enter the ball from below, and make it proof against damage from the wind”. Later in life Leonardo recalls the construction, in a note datable around the 1515, “Remember the solders used for soldering the ball on Santa Maria del Fiore in ’69”. This was a time when he was involved in a scheme to manufacture parabolic mirrors, made of a number of facets soldered together.

Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto | At Jumeirah Beach, which faces the iconic Burj Al Arab, a solar-powered, 21-foot “Smart Palm” provides shade and much more—Wi-Fi, charging station, lamppost, bulletin board, security camera, emergency call button. Over a hundred will be installed at city beaches and parks. A decade ago Dubai had one of the largest ecological footprints of any city in the world. By 2050 it wants to have the smallest. Can it get there? My work revolves around the making of the future, how our society transitions through new ways of living, and how technology is changing our approach to the environment and to our cities. I’ve embarked on a journey with @natgeo to showcase how Dubai aims to become one of the world’s greenest cities. Photo by @KristaRossow.| Nestled in the Rif Mountains of Morocco, the blue city of Chefchaouen is irresistible for photography. Along with countless other visitors, I was charmed by the blue-hued streets and alleyways. One of the theories as to why the city is blue is that the Sephardic Jews who were expelled during the Spanish Inquisition brought the tradition of painting their homes blue. Then in recent times, the locals painted the entire old city to entice visitors. This city is no travel secret, but if you get out early in the morning you can find quiet streets. And in a place that lives daily with large numbers of tourists, I do my best to say hello to the locals and show respect for their beautiful city. Photo by @michaelclarkphoto | Bison off the edge of the Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone National Park on a snowy winter day in Wyoming. It is quite stunning how close you can get to such large animals (in a car) in Yellowstone. These Bison moved off the road so we could get by and were only a few meters from our open windows–and they kept a close eye on us the whole time. They are obviously habituated to humans, being in one of the most visited national parks in the United States, but even so they are majestic animals.

Photo by @andrea_frazzetta | Cambodia, Tonle Sap lake, the Floating village of Chhnok Trou. A men crossing the village by boat at dawn. The lake supports a massive freshwater ecosystem, which in turn supports the people who live around it in floating villages. Despite being built on the water, the floating villages operate similarly to villages on land. There are grocery stores, schools, barbers, temples.
